Aloatran Gentle Lemur or Bandro
Hapalemur Griseus Aloatrensis
.
RANGE: Lake Alaotra Madagascar
HABITAT: Papyrus reed beds and bamboo around lake shore marsh and over the lake itself.
CONSERVATION STATUS: Endangered. Estimated 5000 left in wild. Deforestation to make way for rice growing is causing erosion. If this continues in the only marshland they inhabit they will become extinct in the wild. Improving local education attempted to persuade the human population that by conserving the lake they help themselves by conserving the means to grow rice.
NOTES: The Alaotran hapalemur (gentle lemur or bandro) is a highly endangered subspecies, and is the first of the gentle lemurs to be brought into captive management and breeding. D.W.C.T. have complemented their work with an effective poster campaign in the area of Lake Alaotra, drawing the attention of local people to their plight. Gerald Durrell described them as "Honey-coloured teddy bears.". May be able to swim a short distance. The first ever captive-bred lemur was born at Jersey Zoo in 1993, followed by a further 24 to date (2002).
