RANGE: Europe and parts of Asia
HABITAT: Woods gardens farmland parks even towns. Breed in holes in trees.
SIZE: 45 cms
DIET: Small mammals e.g. shrews and voles.
CONSERVATION STATUS: A common European owl.
NOTES: Wavering, soft song 'hooooo' (never quite the same twice) and cry of 'keee-wik' are unforgettable heard on cold winter nights. Usually heard rather than seen as nocturnal. Dark large eyes adapted to night hunting. Nests in hole in tree. Colour varies from brown to grey. Mottled plumage. No ear tufts.
