HABITAT: Dry grassland, scrubland.
SIZE: Average 61 cms (24 inches)
DIET: Vegetation
CONSERVATION STATUS: Once abundant but numbers much reduced by hunting for meat, ornamental shells and pet trade. Now protected.
NOTES: The large tortoises of the world are restricted now to a few places near to the Equator. Madagascar is home to four of the rarest species of tortoises in the world. Has armoured protection. Cold blooded. Tortoises can live for well over 100 years.
