RANGE: Tropical islands in Indonesia and Nicobar (S.E. of India across the Bay of Bengal)
HABITAT: Forests in particular where it nests. Roams in flocks elsewhere.
DIET: Fruit. Grain.
CONSERVATION STATUS: Not endangered.
NOTES: The Dodo became extinct in Mauritius in the 17th century. Recent research on a specimen at Oxford University using genetic samples has proved that the Dodo was a pigeon and that the Dodo's closest surviving relative is the Nicobar pigeon.
