RANGE: Africa south of the Sahara. NW India.

HABITAT: Open savanna

SIZE: 1.5-2 metres (tail can add up to 1 metre)

DIET: stalked mammals birds

CONSERVATION STATUS: There are so few lions in Africa that they may become extinct in the wild according to Dr Lawrence Frank of University of California (2003).

The number of the animal has fallen by 90% in the last 20 years. There are now estimated to be only 16,000 - 30,000 in the wild, compared to perhaps 200,000 in the early 1980's. Worse still these dwindling numbers are in more and more fragmented groups resulting in interbreeding.

NOTES: Litters average 2-3 up to 6. Usually live and stalk in male dominated groups called prides.
