Koala in action at Featherdale Wildlife Park, Sydney
.
RANGE: The eastern states of Australia (Queensland, NSW, Victoria) and some in South Australa.
HABITAT: Eucalyptus forests, small and large trees.
SIZE: Males to 78cm, females to 72cm. Weight 6 to 14 kg.
DIET: Mostly Eucalyptus leaves, sometimes leaves from other trees. But very selective of species and condition.
CONSERVATION STATUS: Vulnerable.
NOTES: Digesting Eucalyptus leaves requires a slow metabolism, thus they sleep 16 hours a day. The toxins in the leaves requires careful selection of the least toxic. This diet has created a unique niche.
