. RANGE: Africa. Nigeria to W. Zaire HABITAT: Rain forest up to 10,000 feet. Live in social groups. Can be a competent tree climber. SIZE: Male 5 - 6 feet Female 4-5 feet DIET: Leaves, buds, stalks, berries, bark, ferns, bamboo, fruit, vegetables, nuts, raisins. It is said do not need to drink water but obtain moisture from their diet. CONSERVATION STATUS: Endangered. Estimated 100,000 in the wild. Threatened by hunting and the "bushmeat" trade. NOTES: There are two races of gorilla in Africa. This lowland gorilla (or western race) and the mountain gorilla (or eastern race). .
