RANGE: S. Burma Malaysia Thailand Kampuchea Sumatra
HABITAT: Dry and rain forest
SIZE: Body 17 - 23 inches. As apes they have no tail
DIET: Fruit leaves shoots buds flowers occasionally insects
NOTES: May be buff / light reddish-brown or mainly black. Gibbons are the smallest apes. In the wild Lar Gibbons live in the same forest as the Sumatran Orangutan. They are extremely agile like acrobats flying from one tree top to the next using their elongated arms to swing and tightrope walking. Gibbons arms are so long that they are held over the animals head when running on the ground. They have particularly loud penetrating atmospheric calls used especially to mark their territory.
CONSERVATION STATUS: Not endangered, although two other gibbon species from Indonesia are endangered, and their forest habitat is disappearing.
