RANGE: Alaska Canada USA Mexico Central America

HABITAT:  Praires, open woodland

SIZE: Nose to tail about 3 feet (1 metre) Smaller than a wolf.

DIET: Rodents rabbits snakes insects carrion fruit berries grasses will enter water to catch fish frogs and crustaceans

NOTES: The Coyote is the North American equivalent of the jackals of Asia and Africa. Together with wolves, jackals are the ancestors of domestic dogs. In Spring 5-10 young are born. Fed by male at first but later by both parents they go off to find their own home range when about 6 months old. Much more common in North America in the past but has been the victim of trapping  shooting and poisoning.
