Bali Starling
Leucopsar Rothschildi
.
RANGE: One small area of Western Bali, Indonesia (Bali Barat National Park)
HABITAT: Tall grassland and forest near the coast
SIZE: 9 -10 inches
DIET: Insects, fruit, seed.
CONSERVATION STATUS: Critically endangered. The size of its historical population is unknown as the bird was only discovered in 1912. Since discovery the numbers have declined from a population on Bali of several hundred. Possibly under 30 individuals left in the wild population in a National Park under armed guard. In 1984 there were 150. Highly prized for their beauty, and a target, unfortunately, for caged bird enthusiasts. Captive bred re-introduction is being attempted now.
NOTES: Gregarious. Nest in holes in trees.
