RANGE: South American Andes. Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador.

HABITAT: Cool high mountain cloud forest. Some of the wettest territory on earth.

DIET: Leaves fruits roots

CONSERVATION STATUS: Vulnerable. Threatened by hunting for food and Asian Medicine. Killed for eating crops.

NOTES: The only South American Bear.  The original Paddington bear? May spend days in trees without touching the ground. Make 'nest' from sticks in trees.
